Dear parents of the awesome room one student’s,
Room 1 writing here, we are here to tell
you that you should be composting. We watched a video on YouTube called Too
Good To Waste! Please read our reasons below and watch the video to see why
composting is so important.
Do you know that 80% of landfill is
recyclable and 50% of your household rubbish is compostable? If we put the
right rubbish in the right places we could reduce the amount of waste going to
our landfills. Food scrapes and organic waste can be composted at home in your
backyard. It’s super easy and great for the garden.
Composting is great for the environment and
easy to make: just follow these steps. Make a compost bin from recycled wood or
dig a hole in the ground. Fill your compost bin with lawn clippings, brown
leaves, and weeds from the garden and food scrapes. Layer these like lasagna.
Turn your pile every week or so to get the oxygen through it. Lastly harvest
your compost by mixing in with your soil in a vegetable or flower garden.
Landfills are being filled with organic matter,
which could be put in our compost bins. Every time new garbage gets put on top
of the landfill, organic matter gets trapped with no oxygen. This produces
large amounts of methane gas, which accounts for 16% of methane emissions made
by humans. Methane gas is bad for the environment and causes air pollution.
Leachate is a type of liquid that is made
at a landfill from rotten food with no oxygen. At the bottom of the landfill
there are coats of cement, rock and clay to keep the leachate from spreading
into our earth and water. There are pipes that collect the leachate and suck it
up, moving it to a place where it will not harm anything. Leachate can be brown
or black. It is really bad for the environment because it can kill people,
plants and animals.
So that is why we should all use a compost
bin. It would reduce the amount of waste going to landfills, which would reduce
the amount of methane gas and leachate. At home use a compost bin and tell
friends and family to use one too. It’s better for the environment.
Thank you for reading our letter.
Yours sincerely
