It will be a busy week again this week. With Christmas excitement in the air we are endeavouring to keep things as settled as possible at school.

Book Amnesty
It’s not too late to return library books and any readers you find around the house.

Plastic Bags
Books will be coming home. A plastic bag would be helpful for extra things that won’t fit in schoolbags. Pencil cases, rulers and refill will stay at school for the last few days.

Stationery
Please ensure that your child has all his/her correct stationery for the term and that all items are clearly marked e.g. gluestick, pencils x2, blue, red and green pens, sharpener, ruler, rubber, colouring pencils and in particular, a whiteboard marker as this seems to be a common item that is missing.  Could you also please check that your child’s pencil case is in working order, as often zips are easily broken and items of stationery are going missing from these.

BYOD trial
Our trial in term 2 has been a great success.   Initial problems have been resolved and these devices will continue to be used to support your child’s learning at HPS.  At this stage, the trial is continuing – we will keep you updated as to whether this becomes a ‘permanent fixture’ at HPS in the senior school.  Remember - there is NO obligation to bring a device to school.

Sport
We will continue Sports on Tuesdays at 2:15pm.  ALL children must wear their sports gear.  After each game a ‘Player of the Day’ will be chosen.  Teachers will look for qualities such as good sportsmanship.   The Adidas Fun Run is on Friday of week 3.  There will be practices during the weeks leading up to this.  This means sports gear MUST be brought to school EVERY DAY!

Adidas Fun Run
Please get as many sponsors as you can for this fun event.  It will be held on Friday 7th August, probably at 11am (details to come).  This event is doubling as the trial for our Interschool Cross Country team.

Friday 3rd July 2015

Dear Parents and Caregivers

I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself.   I am Kathy Pittaway and I am married to Mark and we have three adult children, Rachael (married to William), Alex and Tom.  During my spare time I really enjoy tramping with my friends and family and visiting amazing places around New Zealand and just recently I have started experimenting with mountain biking.

I had the pleasure of teaching at Howick Primary School in the Senior School for two years from 2012 and I am extremely excited about returning to teach in Room 1 for the remainder of the year.  For the past 18 months I have been involved in a variety of fixed-term and relieving teaching roles at different schools throughout Howick and Pakuranga.  I have had the opportunity to be involved in teaching positions throughout all year groups and have experienced different learning environment like modern learning environments and digital classrooms.

I am looking forward to following-on from Mrs Laura Dower and continuing to deliver a high standard of teaching with a focus on supporting your child to become an independent motivated learner who strives to achieve their personal best.  To be able to achieve this I believe it is really important that positive communication is maintained between school and home.   Please feel free to email me at k.pittaway@howickprimary.school.nz or arrange a time to meet with me to discuss any concerns or information you believe would help support your child’s learning.

I would like to wish you and your family a relaxing holiday break, enjoy spending some time together, playing games, going for some walks/rides and having a few sleep-ins.

Kindest regards

Kathy Pittaway

Pedal Power - BMX

Wednesday 3rd June 2015

Dear Parent/Caregiver,

We are very fortunate to have Counties Manukau Sport coming to teach the Senior School some bike safety and skills using BMX bikes in a programme called Pedal Power.

Each class in the Senior School will be participating for one whole day on the school field. All of the bikes and helmets will be provided.

Since this is a whole day activity, the students can wear suitable mufti clothes on this day. Every child MUST wear long pants, a long sleeve t-shirt and their sports shoes (covered shoes).  The clothing will need to be worn for safety reasons and we do not want children coming to school in shorts and t-shirts.

Due to a trip for some of our students this term, the students are not all staying with their class for Pedal Power. Listed below are the dates the Room 1 students will be participating.

Yours sincerely,

Senior School Team

For term 2 we will be using devices for our Concept of Systems (plus other in-class learning).  This will have been discussed with you at the 3-way conferences.  A letter will be coming home about this – we would appreciate it if you can fill this out as soon as possible so the children can bring in their devices in week 1.  There is NO obligation to bring a device to school – it is only if you agree.  Rest assured – they will be locked away when we are out of class and they will only be used during class contact time.  Please do not bring your device in until your letter has been returned.

Stationery
There are quite a few children who appear to have lost/misplaced/used-up their pens and pencils.  Can you please ask your child and replace what is missing.  It is particularly bad in the Room 2 maths class – many children need pencils, rubbers and whiteboard markers.  Thanks.

Whanau Sport
We will continue to have Sport on Tuesdays at 2:15pm.  Please make sure your child has their sports gear on this day.  We will be teaching winter sports skills this term, plus continuing the theme of sportsmanship and teamwork.  After each game or session a ‘Player of the Day’ will be chosen.

Hats
Students are NOT required to wear a hat this term.

The children are allowed up to 5 books at a time and can have them for a fortnight.

A reminder to go to Facebook for whole school learning and updates.  https://www.facebook.com/HowickPrimarySchool

HomeFun
We will be continuing the themed HomeFun sheets this term as the children really got into them and loved sharing their work.  The spelling will now be at the back of the HomeFun books from this term.  These will be given out each Friday and are due back to school the following Friday.  Sometimes students may not understand part of their task, so make sure they come in to see me throughout the week so I can guide them in the right direction.  Please remember to also encourage reading at least 3 times a week and maths (Mathletics).  They also have a Studyladder account that they can use at home as well as school.

Assembly
You are kindly invited to join us for assembly on Thursdays at 2:15pm (every odd week – the first being April 23rd).

Tissues
If you haven’t already, please send a large box of tissues to school ready for when the inevitable winter sniffles come.  We will look after them and put them out as required.

Recyclable Art
From June we will be learning about Creativity.  As part of this concept in Room 3 we are asking you to bring in plastic bags (any size and colour). There is a collection box ready and waiting for you.

Exciting News
As Room 1 already knows – Laura is leaving HPS at the end of term 2.  She is joining the rest of us in the joys of parenthood!  We congratulate her and wish her the best.  Currently her plan is to be back in 2016.  Mrs Kathy Pittaway will be in Room 1 for the remainder of the year.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to make an appointment with the classroom teacher.  My email address is l.dower@howickprimary.school.nz

Stationery
Please ensure that your child has all his/her correct stationery for the term and that all items are clearly marked.  It would be a good idea to check your child’s stationery at the end of each term to see if any stationery needs to be topped up.

Whanau Sport
We will have Sports plus swimming for those who want it, on Tuesdays at 2:15pm.  Please feel free to join us!  On Fridays the students will be divided into Whanau teams for sport.  The teachers will provide a selection of sports suitable for the summer. e.g. non-stop cricket, Touch rugby.  After each game a ‘Player of the Day’ will be chosen.  Teachers will look for qualities such as good sportsmanship.

Swimming
Our swimming days are Monday (at Lloyd Elsmore), Tuesday and Friday.  All children are expected to participate in the school swimming programme.  However, if your child is sick or injured please send a note or email to excuse them from that day’s swimming.  They must wear a swimming cap in the HPS pool.

Library
The children are allowed up to 5 books at a time and can have them for a fortnight.
Our library times are as follows:
Rm 1 - Thursday
Rm 2 - Friday
Rm 3 - Wednesday

Hats
All students are required to wear a hat this term.  A friendly reminder to SLIP... SLOP... SLAP ... WRAP!

Class Blogs
Our class blogs are up and running!  We would love to get feedback on what we put on our blog and we appreciate you taking the time to look at our blog and comment on what you see. Please note that all comments are moderated by the teachers before being published. Please remember to post your first name after your comment.
Senior School Blogs
A reminder to go to Facebook for whole school learning and updates.  https://www.facebook.com/HowickPrimarySchool

Whanau Groups and Student Leaders
Our incredible Student Leaders will soon be seen in action, as will the new Whanau groups.   This year we will be encouraging sportsmanship, camaraderie, being supportive etc through using the Whanau groups at all sporting events as well as every day activities both in and outside of the classroom.  Points for each Whanau will be accumulated throughout the term and a reward will be given to the Whanau with the most.

Homework
A homework sheet will come home weekly on Friday and handed in the following Friday.  Homework will consist of reading, spelling and maths (Mathletics).  Children benefit from daily reading and Mathletics practice.

Assembly
You are kindly invited to join us for assembly on Thursdays at 2:15pm (every second week).

Tissues
Please send a large box of tissues to school ready for when the inevitable sniffles come with the change of weather.  We will look after them and put them out as required.

Recyclable Art
It would be great if you could start collecting bottle tops, toilet rolls, small containers, interesting pieces of cardboard, offcuts of material and similar items for us.  The plan is to create wearable/recyclable art either at the end of term 2 or in term 3 this year so if we can start collecting now, that would be fantastic.  Please send the items in to class where there will be a box for collection.  Thanks

If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to make an appointment with the classroom teacher.  My email address is l.dower@howickprimary.school.nz

Kind regards

Mrs Simpson, Mrs Dower and Miss Lister
