Farewell Room 1 for 2016

When Malakai Fekitoa came to visit Room 1.
Congratulations everyone on a fantastic year of learning in room 1.  It has been exciting to see so many of you set yourself goals and strive super hard to achieve these.

Best wishes to all our wonderful year 6 students as you head off to your new school next year.   Make yourself known to your new school, volunteer to take on extra responsibilities, trial for those sports teams and make a positive contribution to your new school community.  To our wonderful year 5 students, best wishes for next year.  You will all make amazing role models for our HPS students and after attending this years prizegiving I wonder what award you will be working towards achieving in 2016.

Enjoy your holidays, remember to stay safe, click that belt, wear those life jackets, swim between the flags and slip, slop, slap.

Kindest regards
Kathy Pittaway

Leanne's B.B.Y.C

I had such a fun day and I wanted to do it again sometime. Yesterday afternoon some people from our class went sailing. When it was our turn to go to Bucklands beach we walked down Juliet Ave, and the bus was already there waiting for us, I was so excited to go. When we got on the bus I was really excited to go sailing because I have never sailed a boat in my entire life. When we got there I was so happy then the instructor started talking about all the stuff that we have to do on the boat. I was listening very carefully so that I would know what to do. After they finished talking about what to do Mrs Pittaway put us in pairs my partner was Bonnie, I thought she was a really good sailer! Me and Bonnie were the first one’s to go out onto the water. I was really scared at first but then it got better and better for me and so much more funner too. After we finished playing around out in the sea in our boats we all had a race. We all went to the start line and we had to race to the yellow buoy and back to the start line. We did that three times in a row! It was awesome when all the races had finished we all steered our boats away because……. WE HAD A HUGE WATER FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! We all had bottles that had a hole so that we could fill it up with seawater then we could wet everyone! After we had a water fight me and Bonnie capsized. So after we capsized the safety boats came as fast as they could when they got there, they got us out of the water and towed me back I lost my….. HAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then we all had a lovely and freezing swim. And that was my fantastic day By:Leanne

This is my Recount on B.B.Y.C. It was a spectacular day and I want to do it again. BBYC On the last day of November in the afternoon, at 12:00am, me and most of the class went to Bucklands Beach Yacht Club at Bucklands Beach. Mrs Pittaway chose our buddies and I was with Billie-Jean .We slot on our life jackets [ for safety] and decided on what boat we should sail on. Of we went into the salty water. We used the tiller to steer the opposite way because if you steer to the right you go left and if you steer to the left you go right. We sailed in the boundary ,that we got. BOOM , alot of people crashed into us and we also crashed into a lot of people.” On you marks, get set go!” We pulled our mainsheet and off we went .[ we were having a race.] At the end we got to have free time in the water and after that we went in the bus and went back to school, we got changed into our school uniform .I felt FROZEN By Tajnoor

BBYC!

My class room went to Bucklands beach to sail here is a recount about it in my point of view. BBYC! Yesterday room one went to Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. Room one sat down and listened to the instructors tell us the instructions .When they finished explaining everything I was a bit confused and puzzled. When we got into it I was fearful and nervous.Everybody was going… BOOM! CRASH! Everybody was crashing into everyone else's boats. In the midst of sailing I got donged on the head by the boom on the sail. So Gabby and I rowed towards the patrol boat. I jumped on board and iced my head. While I was watching I saw the kids starting a water fight and soak each other. I wished I was there on the boat with Gabby. But I knew that I wasn’t allowed to go off the patrol boat because head was still in bad pain. After a while I hopped back on the boat. Gabby and I nearly capsized but the patrol guys told us to release the sail a bit. So we did, after we did some races Gabby and I went as fast as we could. In the first race we came second. In the second (Last race) race we came… fourth to last. After the races we decided to ask the patrol guy Peter to tow us to shore. When we got to shore Sam was getting buried in the soft sand. While there was Leanne, Elliot and Bonnie. Gabby and I jumped in and swam and swam. Elliot started a big group of belly flopping people.I joined in and there were heaps of humongous splashes. While we were swimming Caden arrived with his boat I swam to him not noticing that I couldn’t touch the seabed. “Arrggh! I can’t touch the bottom!” I exclaimed. Everyone laughed until Gabby came towards Georgia and found out that they both couldn’t touch the ground. When everybody came to swim everybody did a belly flop in the group Elliot had made. Splish! Splash! Splish. In the water we splashed and splashed. After a while we played in the water even longer. Then Mrs Pittaway said that it was time to go. We all dried ourselves and set off on our towels, or bags in the bus. When we got back to school we got changed into our school uniform. Then we went back to our classroom. Afterwards we went home. I felt exhausted and very very salty. I also felt freezing. By:Tamara

BBYC SAILING ADVENTURE

On the 30th of November 5 room 1 students and some room 3 and 2 students went sailing in the morning. We went on the bus to little bucks and to have a great time and learn to sail. I was sailing in the optimist solo.

I was turning and swirling around and at one point I had the bailer in my hand and I was scooping water out of the ocean and wetting the other sailing pairs.

Later we had our very first race I was holding a solid 2nd place but as we turned Douw cut me off so I came 4th overall which made me pretty empressed. The next race we had 3 minutes to prepare so i sailed around the outside of all the boys and then sailed all the way back and by the time i was in the best position to start the race was off,I was in the lead but it was hard to maintain my lead when everyone was gaining so much on me but luckily I maintained and WON! The next race I failed miserably and came last unfortunately but I still had hope next race i was leading by a mile and a half but suddenly Henry and Aidan were right behind me and they were  getting closer every single minute then I let  sail out and wosh  i was gaining everything back and i won with a great big smile on my face. The next races I came 2 and 3 which i was pleased with, then we came back to shore and we had to use all our strength to pull the optimists on to the beach so the tide wouldn't pull the boat out to sea. I had a great day as well as everyone else.

BBYC RECOUNT
Beep! As we hopped on the bus to sailing my heart was pounding, I had butterflies in my stomach. When we got there I felt a little less nervous as the instructors  comforted me.Bridget and I were together,as we set off on our journey Bridget was on the main sheet and I was on the helm we were going like rockets in the sky.

After a while we did some races,Bridget and I didn't get a proper placing we got fourth place.I was exhausted but I was having so much fun Bridget started to get cold so she went in and the wonderful Mrs Pittaway. A little bit later we had water fights with the other boats I got soaked it was freezing cold, and somehow Mrs Pittaway lost her glasses. As we were coming back in there were two girls shouting “ Could you get it” so we sailed over to it and it was a squeaky dog toy. After that it was a slow journey to the beach and to be honest it was pretty boring when finally land ahow.

We hopped out of the opti and I went for a nice refreshing swim.Georgia and I ran and jumped in together it was ice cold, it was a bit too cold for me so I went and got changed. I had something to eat I had juice and a cake. Bridget and I were playing on the shore together,I started to warm up when the bus came.

As we hopped on the bus I got to sit in the backwards seat with Georgia across from Tamara and Kevin. The bus ride was surprisingly fun Kevin was pulling funny faces and singing songs in Korean  like wrecking ball. It was a awesome day.
