Rhys war story

My great grandpa hated his helmet in world war 2 but 1 day he woke up when a hole was shot in his helmet. Ever since then he had this photo, we do not know if that is him drinking coffee in the background. So if he didn't sleep with his helmet on my mom wouldn't be born I wouldn't be born so on so on.

The Story
Great-Grandpa Hinterman was a gunner on a “mechanized howitzer” which he described as a tank without the benefit of armor.  He took part in the Normandy invasion but because of trouble on their landing craft, he went in on the second day, June 7th.  Nearly two months later, they were still trapped on the Normandy peninsula.  This photo was taken on August 2, 1944.  He wrote on the back, “I had that helmet on when the hole appeared on August 2, 1944.”

In the picture you can see the helmet sitting on a gas can with Great-Grandpa Hinterman’s carbine leaning against it.  We are not sure if that is him drinking a cup of coffee in the background.   He said that he hated the helmet because it was so heavy and hot in the summer sun – until that day.   The picture is a bit tattered because he carried that picture in his wallet every day of the rest of his life.
